In a world where sound has been banned, a young woman finds herself on an unexpected quest to learn to listen again.
Performed by The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret, and comissioned by the Pivot Legal Society, The Listening Jar was written in response to the prompt to compose a theatrical piece on the nature of Justice.
The storyworld that unfolded was a dystopian police state where sound itself had been banned, and all the members of the city were required to wear “Bafflers” - earmuffs fitted to the head to keep the citizens safe from the double threat of unexpected, mysterious sound, and the human created Drone - designed to destroy all other sound (despite its horrible ear-splitting quality).
Washing laundry one morning, our heroine discovers a jar floating downriver, and opens it to discover a musical message in a bottle, setting in motion events that will transform her life and the lives of everyone around her.
